Andy Biggs and Fellow Republicans Vote Against Revoking Normal Trade Relations with Russia

Recently, the US House of Representatives voted to revoke normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus, a move aimed at ending the Russian war in Ukraine. However, not all Republicans supported this measure. Andy Biggs of Arizona was one of eight lawmakers who voted against the bill.

Grothman expressed concerns that the changes to the Magnitsky Act could be used to apply economic sanctions to countries based on their stance on LGBTQ rights or abortion laws. He also opposed the addition of new language to the law, arguing that it is 'unnecessarily vague and could lead to future abuses.'

The bill aims to suspend normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus, which would prevent Russian products from entering the US market. Texas Republican Kevin Brady, the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, urged his colleagues to vote for the bill, calling it an important step in standing up for Ukraine and democracy.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, also supported the measure, stating that it would 'tell Vladimir Putin that norms still matter.' However, not all Republicans shared this view. Andy Biggs, along with several other lawmakers, voted against the bill.

The question of whether Russia is behaving like a normal, law-abiding nation was raised during the debate. House Majority Leader Hoyer asked if Russia's actions were in line with international norms, and emphasized that the answer has been a resounding 'no.' The House ultimately voted 424-8 to revoke normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus.

The measure will now head to the Senate for further consideration. While some lawmakers like Andy Biggs may have opposed this move, it is clear that the US government is committed to standing up to Russian aggression in Ukraine.
